I currently have a SafeLink phone. My only complaint is that at the end of the month, they delete any minutes you have left over. Also you cannot restrict messages which use up your minutes quickly.

I agree with all the above. Don’t judge. You haven’t been in our shoes. I receive almost $600 a MONTH. Now pay rent, utilities, buy food, bus pass because I have no car. I can’t work. I have to stretch to survive. I don’t have even $10 for a phone bill. When family died and moved I needed some way to contact family when I need help. Only 2 years ago I got my first cell phone. I was worried if I was outside and something happened, there would no way to get help. There will be abusers in every type of programs even for the rich. You can not weed them all out. So don’t take away a needed service. If you have money for more people to follow the service, make sure people aren’t abusing the system, then follow up. Thats fine with me. Just don’t let the bad apple ruin it for those that need this service.

My problem is, I need a cell phone that is the ‘slider’-style. I dropped the ‘flip phone’-style several times, because of my eye-hand coordination problem. I also need one with big(not monstrous) keys.

The ‘slider’ phones that are available now, have smaller buttons, and a higher SAR(Specific Absorption Rate) rating.

I agree with you. I only get $830.00 per month. I pay $650.00 for rent and thank God I don’t have to pay for the utilities, but when I pay for bus tickets, there is barely $100.00 left for food.

There are many people that don’t have any income at all, so $20 dollars means a great deal to them. Thank you for saying what you did.

Just found your blog and thought you would like an update. My mother has a difficult time seeing with only one that partially has vision. I needed to find her a phone with large buttons and number read out. I found the Cenior for $59.95 at yippz.com . She doesn’t use her phone often, just for emergencies while she’s out. I got her the H2O minute plan for $100 for one year. That works out to $8.33 a month. It’s perfect for her. The phone is unlocked and you can use any GSM carrier you choose.

Ginger, I am pretty sure you haven’t been at a situation where you do not have enough to even buy food because you have to pay for your home and medicine. Even a dollar is hard to shell out if you have to prioritize between medicine/food/shelter over a $20/month phone.

I need to know how to receive free minutes on a cell phone for someone on disability and is in dire need of a way to stay in touch with me4dical and also a contact person. To this point in time he has been buying minutes for a tracfone but due to some other medical expenses he can not afford to at this time. Is there anything that you can do to help? Thank you
